The Department’s responsibilities include, in particular, treatment planning using ionising radiation and treatment of patients with diagnosed cancer in both inpatient and outpatient setting. The latest conformal therapy techniques, such as IMRT and stereotactic, are used when planning and delivering treatment. Therapies are conducted both on a stand-alone basis or as combined radiochemiotherapy.
The Department holds 32 beds and provides treatment of CNS, breast, gastrointestinal and cancers, Hodgkin’s and non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas, head and neck, soft tissue, bone, lung, skin and urinary-genital cancers. It also performs radiosurgery of lesions in the CNS and extracranial with a BrainLab system. Since 2013, we have used a CyberKnife machine.
Treatment is modified on a case-by-case basis, i.e. conformal radiotherapy is applied (treatment by ionising radiation where radiation dose distribution is adjusted to the tumour volume including a margin of potentially involved tissues and a margin reflecting rumour mobility). At the same time, the use of intensity modulated radiation dose allows the efficacy of treatment to be improved while reducing dose to critical organs. We use stereotactic radiosurgery, i.e treatment of lesions and destruction of defined structures by a single high dose of precisely focused ionising radiation. Radiation Oncology Department III also comprises Radiation Oncology Clinic III. The Clinic’s tasks include: diagnostic testing, qualification for radiotherapy and follow-up.
