Thomas "Rock" Mackie, professor emeritus of medical physics at the University of Wisconsin.
Thomas "Rock" Mackie is a Canadian medical physicist, engineer, and entrepreneur known for pioneering work in radiation therapy and medical imaging. In 1980, he received an undergraduate degree in physics (University of Saskatchewan) and 1984 a doctorate in physics (University of Alberta). He returned to Saskatchewan from Alberta, working as a clinical medical physicist in Regina. In 1987, he started his professional activity at the University of Wisconsin, where he served as a professor and held leadership roles in medical technology companies, shaping the future of precision medicine. In 1992, he co-founded Geometrics Corporation to develop the Pinnacle TM treatment planning system that originated in his research group at the University. He played a key role in developing tomotherapy, an advanced form of image-guided radiation therapy. He co-founded and was Chairman of the Board of TomoTherapy Inc. (1997), a public company now owned by Accuray. In 2014, he founded the veterinary CT scanner company ASTO CT. Now, as a board chairman of Leo Cancer Care, he focuses on delivering radiotherapy to patients in an upright position. Since 2014, Rock is a member and, since 2018, Vice-Chair of the International Commission on Radiation Units and Measurements (ICRU).
As a genius inventor and researcher with over 40 patents and 170 scientific papers, he significantly impacted the shape of modern radiotherapy.
