Brachytherapy is an established technique in oncology which has been used for many years in our Centre. Many artificial radioactive isotopes are now being applied in cancer therapy with steadily improving physical properties to ensure safety for both patients and physicians. This allows a significant reduction in radiation damage to healthy tissues that surround the tumour.<\/p>\n<p>Owing to the implementation of new-generation therapeutic machines, Microselectron HDR (currently Flexitron HDR) and PDR systems, the Greater Poland Cancer Centre (GPCC) has greatly increased the number of patients and cancer types treated to the level comparable with renowned centres in the European Union.<\/p>\n<p>Every year, we provide treatment to over 1,000 patients who account for approx. 20% of all patients treated with radiotherapy. The GPCC Brachytherapy Unit is the only public brachytherapy centre in Poland that offers LDR brachytherapy procedures (the so-called permanent implants) under a contract with the National Health Fund.[\/vc_column_text]<h2 class=\" \" data-delay='0'>Unit structure<\/h2>[vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Cancer Brachytherapy Laboratory<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Brachytherapy Treatment Planing and Dosimetry Laboratory\u00a0<\/strong>(organisationally, a part of the Medical Physics Unit),<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hyperthermia Laboratory, Endoscopy Laboratory, Permanent Implants Laboratory,<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Brachytherapy Clinic,<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Reception Unit<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text]<h2 class=\" \" data-delay='0'>What equipment do we use for treatment?<\/h2>[vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]The Greater Poland Cancer Centre is currently using\u00a0<strong>three brachytherapy machines<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2 Flexitron\u00a0<strong>HDR<\/strong>(High Dose Rate) systems,<\/li>\n<li>1 microselectron\u00a0<strong>PDR<\/strong>(Pulsed Dose Rate) system.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Unit employs modern treatment planning systems Oncentra Brachy, Oncentra Prostate, integrated therapeutic line with a SIMULIX simulator with a CT extension, Philips Endura imaging system, 2 real-time planning systems SWIFT\/SPOT for HDR and LDR brachytherapy of prostate cancer.<\/p>\n<p>GPCC Brachytherapy Unit is one of three centres in Poland to utilise an advanced hyperthermia system by BSD Medical for cancer treatment. In terms of this kind of equipment, the Unit counts among Europe\u2019s best oncology centres.[\/vc_column_text]<h2 class=\" \" data-delay='0'>Procedures currently performed by the GPCC Brachytherapy Unit<\/h2>[vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>LDR (permanent implant) and HDR interstitial brachytherapy,<\/li>\n<li>Breast cancer interstitial brachytherapy as a boost or APBI,<\/li>\n<li>Skin cancer interstitial and contact brachytherapy,<\/li>\n<li>Lip cancer interstitial brachytherapy,<\/li>\n<li>Head and neck cancer interstitial and contact brachytherapy,<\/li>\n<li>Penile cancer interstitial brachytherapy,<\/li>\n<li>Advanced abdominal cancer interstitial brachytherapy, including pancreatic cancer, colorectal cancer recurrence, retroperitoneal sarcomas,<\/li>\n<li>Trachea and lung cancer endoluminal brachytherapy,<\/li>\n<li>Oesophagus cancer endoluminal brachytherapy,<\/li>\n<li>Bile duct cancer endoluminal brachytherapy,<\/li>\n<li>Anal cancer endoluminal and interstitial brachytherapy,<\/li>\n<li>Gynaecological cancer endoluminal and interstitial brachytherapy,<\/li>\n<li>Interstitial and surface hyperthermia in combination with brachytherapy, teleradiotherapy and chemotherapy,<\/li>\n<li>Diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text]<h2 class=\" \" data-delay='0'>Who provides the treatment?<\/h2>[vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]Brachytherapy procedures require involvement of a highly specialised team of medical professionals representing different specialities.
